Concept Métal, your supplier of tungsten and tungsten alloys

Tungsten has the highest melting point of any metal (3,422 °C), a density comparable to that of gold, and mechanical strength that is maintained even at very high temperatures. Working with tungsten requires expertise that few suppliers possess.

What is tungsten?

Tungsten (symbol W, atomic number 74) is a steel-gray refractory metal known for its exceptional properties.

This metal has exceptional properties:

  • the highest melting point of all metals (3,422 °C)
  • a density of 19.3 g/cm³
  • Hardness and mechanical strength retained at elevated temperatures
  • excellent corrosion resistance
  • a very low coefficient of thermal expansion

Depending on the application, tungsten is used in its pure form or as an alloy: copper-tungsten (W-Cu), tungsten-lanthanum (W-La), tungsten-rhenium (W-Re), and tungsten-thorium (W-Th).

The Properties of Tungsten

High-Temperature Resistance

Tungsten retains its mechanical properties well beyond 2,000 °C, a temperature at which most metals weaken. This property makes it irreplaceable in the most extreme thermal environments.

Density

With a density of 19.3 g/cm³, tungsten is a standard material used for ballast and armor in the aerospace industry, ballistics, and medical radiation therapy equipment.

Hardness and Wear Resistance

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials in the world and is used to make cutting tools, dies, and dies used in the mechanical engineering industry.

What are the industrial applications of tungsten?

Tungsten and its alloys are used in a wide variety of industries for:

  • electrodes for TIG welding and resistance welding
  • Tungsten carbide cutting tools and equipment
  • Counterweights and armor in the aerospace and defense industries
  • filaments, cathodes, and heating elements
  • collimators and shielding for medical imaging
  • electrodes for electrical discharge machining (EDM)
