Concept Métal, your supplier of thoriated tungsten

Thoriated tungsten is a tungsten alloy containing a small percentage of thorium oxide (ThO₂). This addition gives it superior electron emission properties compared to pure tungsten and better mechanical strength at high temperatures.

What is thoriated tungsten?

Thoriated tungsten is an alloy in which ThO₂ particles are finely dispersed throughout the tungsten matrix. They facilitate electron emission and stabilize the metal’s structure at high temperatures.

This material has several advantages:

  • easier arc ignition at low voltage
  • excellent electric arc stability
  • enhanced mechanical performance at very high temperatures
  • improved machinability compared to pure tungsten

What are the applications for thoriated tungsten?

Thoriated tungsten is used for:

  • DC TIG welding electrodes (WT10 / WT20 / WT30 / WT40)
  • Cathodes for X-ray tubes and medical imaging
  • filaments and heating elements for vacuum furnaces
  • high-temperature aerospace components
  • ion sources and research equipment

Since thorium is only slightly radioactive, thorium-free alternatives are available (WL15, WL20, WC20). Our specialists can advise you on the best choice based on your application and regulatory requirements.
