Copper alloys comprise a broad family of materials with a variety of properties, including mechanical strength, conductivity, corrosion resistance, and machinability. From brass to bronze, including copper-aluminum alloys and specialty coppers, each alloy meets specific industrial requirements.

What is a copper alloy?

A copper alloy is a metallic material in which copper is the base element, combined with one or more other elements (zinc, tin, aluminum, nickel, beryllium) to improve its properties.

The main families of copper alloys are:

  • brass (copper + zinc): good machinability, aesthetic qualities
  • HR (high-strength) brass: enhanced mechanical strength
  • bronze (copper + tin): resistance to wear and friction
  • Copper-aluminum (copper + aluminum): performance in a marine environment
  • Special copper alloys (CuBe, CuCrZr, CuNiSi): high performance

This diversity makes it possible to meet the needs of a wide variety of applications, ranging from standard mechanical parts to high-precision technical components.

What are the industrial applications for copper alloys?

Because of their versatility, copper alloys are used in many industries to manufacture:

  • mechanical components and precision parts
  • anti-friction rings, bearings, and bushings
  • fittings, valves, and components for the shipbuilding industry
  • electrical contacts and conductive components
  • molds and inserts for plastic injection molding
  • resistance welding electrodes

Mechanical Strength

Depending on their composition, copper alloys offer very different levels of mechanical strength. HR brass and copper-aluminum alloys can withstand high stresses, while bronze excels in applications involving friction and wear.

Conductivity

Copper alloys retain good thermal and electrical conductivity, making them suitable for electrical applications, heat exchangers, and injection molds.

Corrosion Resistance

Copper-aluminum and copper-nickel alloys are distinguished by their excellent resistance to marine and chemical environments. Their mechanical properties can be improved through forging or heat treatment. They are widely used in the shipbuilding, offshore, and petrochemical industries.
