The tungsten-lanthanum (W-La) is a tungsten alloy enriched with lanthanum oxide, designed for high-performance welding electrodes. It combines the thermal stability of tungsten with remarkable arc stability, while offering a safe, non-radioactive alternative to thoriated tungsten.

What is cupranthane?

The tungsten-lanthanum is an alloy consisting of 97 to 99 percent tungsten and 1 to 2 percent lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃). This addition alters the behavior of the electrode without the use of a radioactive element.

The Properties of Tungsten-Lanthanum

That is the major advantage of tungsten-lanthanum in welding: easy ignition, a stable arc, and reliable re-ignition, even at low currents. The electrode tip lasts longer, ensuring consistent weld quality.

The tungsten-lanthanum retains the heat resistance of pure tungsten and can withstand the hottest environments, which is why it is also used in lighting and aerospace applications.

The addition of lanthanum improves the ductility of tungsten, making it easier to machine, form, and produce custom parts.
