Tungsten Rhenium

Tungsten-rhenium alloy is a solid-solution-strengthened alloy composed of tungsten as the matrix and rhenium. The rhenium contents commonly used in these alloys are 3, 5, 10, 25, and 26. It is divided into low-content W-Re alloys (Re ≤ 5%) and high-content W-Re alloys (Re ≥ 15%).
The tungsten-rhenium alloy has better mechanical properties and higher ductility than pure tungsten, and has high resistivity, which gives it better processability and weldability.
The tungsten-rhenium alloy possesses a range of excellent properties, such as a high melting point, high strength, high hardness, high plasticity, a high recrystallization temperature, high resistivity, a high thermoelectric potential, low vapor pressure, low electron work function, and low ductility and brittle transition temperature. Tungsten-rhenium is available in the form of wire, rod, plate, and sheet. Wire materials account for the vast majority and are primarily used as high-temperature structural materials.

The tungsten-rhenium alloy is a composite of two transition metals: tungsten (W) and rhenium (Re). This combination creates a material with unique properties, used in demanding environments. Here is a typical chemical composition for this alloy:

  • Tungsten (W): Approximately 95% to 99% by weight
  • Rhenium (Re): Approximately 1% to 5% by weight

Key Characteristics of the W-Re Alloy

Heat resistance

The W-Re alloy offers exceptional resistance to high temperatures, making it suitable for applications subjected to extreme thermal conditions, such as gas turbine components and heat shields in the aerospace industry.

Corrosion Resistance

Thanks to the presence of rhenium, which is known for its corrosion resistance, the W-Re alloy offers enhanced protection against corrosive environments, thereby extending its service life and reliability.

Mechanical Strength

The tungsten-rhenium alloy combines the high mechanical strength of tungsten with the ductility and creep resistance of rhenium, making it a material well-suited for applications requiring high strength.
