Concept Métal, your supplier of heavy tungsten alloys
Heavy tungsten alloys are sintered composite materials with very high density, combining tungsten with nickel, iron, or copper. Their exceptional density (between 17 and 18.5 g/cm³) makes them the materials of choice wherever high mass density is a key requirement.
What is a heavy tungsten alloy?
A heavy tungsten alloy is a sintered material composed of 90 to 97 percent tungsten, bonded by a nickel-iron (W-Ni-Fe) or nickel-copper (W-Ni-Cu) matrix phase. This powder metallurgy manufacturing process produces a dense, machinable material with controlled mechanical properties.
These alloys offer several advantages:
- a very high density (17 to 18.5 g/cm³)
- good machinability despite its density
- mechanical strength and ductility superior to those of pure tungsten
- excellent radiation absorption capacity

The Properties of Heavy Alloys
Density
With densities close to that of pure tungsten but much better machinability, these alloys allow for the concentration of maximum mass within a small volume.
Radiation Absorption
Tungsten’s high density gives these alloys excellent shielding capabilities against X-rays and gamma rays, superior to that of lead at the same thickness.
Machinability
Unlike pure tungsten, heavy alloys can be machined on conventional machine tools, which facilitates the manufacture of parts with complex geometries.
What are the applications for heavy alloys?
Heavy tungsten alloys are used for:
- Counterweights and ballast in the aerospace and automotive industries
- radiation shielding (medical, nuclear)
- projectiles and ballistic penetrators
- balancing weights for rotating machinery
- Collimators for radiation therapy and imaging
- vibrational and inertial components
