Molybdenum is a transition metal. The pure metal has a metallic white appearance and is very hard. It has often been mistaken for graphite and galena ore. It has a high modulus of elasticity and a high melting point of approximately 2623°C and a boiling point of approximately 4639°C, making it one of the most heat-resistant metals.
Molybdenum is relatively resistant to corrosion and oxidation at room temperature.
Molybdenum is used in alloys, electrodes, and catalysts.
Molybdenum is commonly used in laboratories as a target in X-ray tubes for single-crystal diffraction.
Molybdenum, often called “moly,” is used in industry as a heating element for high-temperature vacuum or gas-atmosphere furnaces.
